After receiving the AR award, international coverage and inquiries of my work increased. The award gave me the greatest confidence that my work would receive recognition not only in Japan but also overseas.
Taketo Shimohigoshi , AAE, 2007 winner
I am very proud to have received two awards in the Emerging Architecture 2004 (Urban Renewal around Palazzo Arese, Cesano Maderno Higly Commended and Bathing establishment on Lake Segrino, Eupilio Commended). After these came other awards including the special mention in Gold Medal for Italian Architecture in 2006 and my works have always been appreciated and published.
Marco Castelletti, Studio di Architettura Marco Castelletti, 2004 winner
Our award was granted in 1999, many years ago! It was especially important for us to realize that our work was considered abroad in the same way that we were interested in architecture out of Spain. It was also fantastic to be invited to Glasgow for the exhibition and to be published in AR!
The issue was important for us and we used it as a presentation of our work, we think that being published in AR put value into our work.
Ángela García de Paredes, paredespedrosa arquitectos, 1999 finalist
The AR Emerging Architecture award introduced us to new audiences, boosting our profile at home and allowing us to get shortlisted for a broader range of new commissions. It was a shot in the arm for our own self-confidence.
Níall McLaughlin, Níall McLaughlin Architects, United Kingdom, 2002 finalist
I was a young architect starting my practice when I had the chance to be twice recognised by the AR Emerging Architecture awards, encouraging me to pursue working with a lot of enthusiasm and dedication. With time, I was able to become an influential architect and a university professor in my country, Colombia. I have no doubt this exposition at an early stage by an internationally-renowned publication positively impacted my learning process and my work.
Daniel Bonilla, Taller de arquitectura de Bogotá, Colombia, 2002 finalist and 2004 winner
Our Ecoboulevard project gained great visibility and was published in dozens of magazines worldwide. It had a great impact in our career and shaped our interests in the design of bioclimatic conditioning solutions for creating comfortable outdoor public space. Today, twelve years later, we can proudly say that ecosistema urbano is a renowned design and consulting company working internationally. This prestigious award significantly boosted our career.
Belinda Tato, ecosistema urbano, Spain, 2007 winner
It is a very prestigious award that emphasises experimentation and innovation.
João Mendes Ribeiro, João Mendes Ribeiro Arquitecto, Portugal, 2000 finalist
The AR Emerging Architecture awards pulled me out of obscurity into the public spotlight. Past winners are now the who’s who of architecture.
Chris Bosse, LAVA Asia Pacific, Australia, 2007 finalist
For us, it was the first major international recognition. From that date, the work of TAMassociati started to enter the international circuit, which in the following years allowed us to win other numerous and prestigious prizes.
TAMassociati, Italy , 2007 finalist
Architecture can be a fairly isolated and even nerdy activity, particularly for young architects starting out. Having my work recognised was a validation of my commitment and a tremendous encouragement. It also put me in contact with fellow finalists, talented colleagues with whom to share experiences – I remember sitting next to Julien de Smedt and Bjarke Ingels, as they were also starting out.
Carl Fredrik Svenstedt, Carl Fredrik Svenstedt Architecte, France, 2004 finalist
As a practice based in the remote city of Perth, Australia, there were few opportunities for us to create a voice both locally and internationally. The AR Emerging Architecture awards remain one of the most prestigious competition in the world. It genuinely embraces and generously promotes the work of young architects.
Adrian Iredale, Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects, Australia, 2006 finalist
Receiving the AR Emerging Architecture award had a great impact on my career. It gave me the opportunity to connect with the world and express my thoughts to a global audience. I am able to take on various international projects now – still to this day, I am humbled and grateful for the great honour.
Yasuhiro "Hiro" Yamashita, Atelier TEKUTO, Japan, 2004 winner
The AR Emerging Architecture award was and remains one of the most important in my career. It meant that other people had noticed my work, that I was doing something worth talking about. Being fostered in such a way is invaluable, particularly at such a vulnerable stage in one's career.
Sean Godsell, Sean Godsell Architects, Australia, 2000 highly commended and 2002 winner
The AREA awards mark a turning point in my career. Undoubtedly, it has been a huge influence on my creative life and encouraged me to believe in myself.
Ryo Yamada,, Japan,, 2001 and 2012 finalist
The AR Emerging Architecture awards came along just at the right moment to give me some much-needed global exposure. It was a real honour to be in such rarefied company so early in my career.
Stephen Atkinson, Atkinson Architecture, United States, 1999 finalist
The Emerging Architecture awards are an excellent validation of experimentation and excellence in architecture. The inclusion of our Art Installation as finalist in the awards provided opportunity for further artworks which are important in my multidisciplinary architectural practice. Because the awards are hosted by such a well-regarded publication it is high praise to be on the list of previous finalists.
Sarah Foley, Sarah Foley Architects, Australia, 2002 finalist
The recognition of my work in the 1999 AREA awards for the Hannover Tram Stations encouraged me to continue this prototyping the profane for the proletarian, to coach the emerging generation, to inter-culturally correspond: which without the motivation of The Architectural Review wouldn’t have happened. Happy double decades anniversary to the AREA awards and many more to go!
Martin Despang, Despang Architekten, Germany, 1999 finalist
It was a thrill to be a finalist in 2000, following completion of the Dublin Millennium Bridge. The accolade helped to spur me on, give me confidence as a (then!) young architect and put it up to me to “emerge”. This led to the establishment of my own practice, the subsequent commission for my second crossing of the River Liffey in Dublin (The Rosie Hackett Bridge), and many other bridge projects in Ireland. Thank you AR for the kick start!
Sean Harrington, Sean Harrington Architects, Republic of Ireland, 2000 finalist
Obtaining the AR Emerging Architecture Award has been very important to continue a path which understands architecture as a merge of building, teaching and thinking.
Jesús Aparicio Guisado, Jesús Aparicio Estudio de Arquitectura, 2004 winner
