UPDATE: The AR Emerging Architecture Awards to be judged online at the WAFVirtual event in December, returning as live event in June 2021 for winner announcement
The World Architecture Festival has launched their new WAFVirtual event from 30 November – 4 December 2020, where the worldwide architectural community can engage for a week of live content, special prizes, talks, panel discussions and networking opportunities.
Due to the global impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, the AR Emerging Architecture Awards will now take place from 23 to 25 June 2021 at the FIL exhibition centre, Lisbon to coincide with the new WAF dates. Judging for this year’s shortlist will however take place digitally during the WAFVirtual week (30 November – 4 December 2020).

The 2020 AR Emerging Architecture awards are now closed
Launched in 1999, the AR Emerging Architecture awards grant early recognition to young designers and celebrates the architectural stars of tomorrow. Established in response to the heavy-hitting Gold Medals, Pritzkers, and other lifetime achievement awards, Emerging Architecture rewards a promising portfolio of work and propels young talent onto the international stage early in their careers.
Previous winners and finalists include Shigeru Ban, Anna Heringer, Thomas Heatherwick, Jürgen Mayer H, Frida Escobedo, Sameep Padora, Bjarke Ingels, Sean Godsell, Dorte Mandrup, Li Xiaodong, Carla Juaçaba, Rick Joy and Junya Ishigami.
Shortlisted practices will be published in the AR’s November issue and invited to present their projects at WAFVirtual in December 2020. Finalists will then be invited to Lisbon for WAF 2021 (23-25 June 2021), for the winners announcement and the chance to win the £10,000 prize!
